Logic? .? do you think that the universe is really logical? i know we use maths to describe the universe and logic is the foundation of math but for a moment have you ever thought that perhaps this is wrong perhaps all the laws of nature do not obey logic? trailerparkbob i gave u the thumb down for the simple reason that u suggested a read but never "ANSWERED THE QUESTION"
What are the basics of logic and what should I look for in a logic book? I am interested in studying logic. I looked at several books in my local library but I'm not sure which one to get. There are some that say "logic" in the title and others that say "clear thinking". They are grouped together and appear to have similar content. Some have a lot about "fallacies", some only have a little info on fallacies. Some focus on mathematical proofs. How many different aspects does logic encompass? What are the basics that I need to know? I want to get a book that has everything about logic. I need to know what to look for in a book because I want to know that I am getting a book that has a complete explanation of logic so that I don't miss out on anything. I don't want to get a book that leaves anything out. Do you know of any good books or websites about logic?
What is the logic in keeping marijuana illegal for personal use? Anyone with a brain knows that marijuana is one of the most harmless "drugs" that exist. Few would argue that it is anywhere near as bad as alcohol or cigarettes, yet it is stigmatized far worse. Where is the logic in this? There seems to be quite a disconnect between the numerous studies done on it, and the governments harsh "anti" stance towards it. What do you really think about this?
What is the logic behind the rounding rule? When rounding to preserve significant figures, why is it that when the digit removed is 5, the preceding number is increased by 1 if it is odd and remains unchanged if it is even? For example, what is the logic in rounding 17.71 to 17.8, but 17.79 to 17.7? Clearly, that is unreasonable!
What is the logic in the spelling of Colonel? Yeah, I know very random question but with English being a difficult language, why is Colonel spelled that way? I know of silent letters but why an "L" AND THE "O' The way it's spelled it doesn't seem like it would be pronouced the way it is. What is the logic with this and the rules of spelling?
What are the applications of reed switches in logic circuits? I am doing a project involving reed switches in logic circuits and would like to know if there are any practical applications for this. My project is the combinational conjuring trick of rev. Thomas Scarborough. I got applications of reed switches but none involving any form of logic circuits. need to submit project report tomorrow.
What is an effective way to improve logic & reasoning? I believe I have common sense but I've read books like Freakonomics and now More Sex is Safer Sex and there are sooo many situations that, if presented without explanations, seem impossible...such as having more sex can in fact be safer for society. Then when the author shows 10 different angles you clearly see the picture and why/how it can be. Are there exercises to improve logic so I can foresee possibilities and not wait for someone to explain to me?
Why do my front speakers diminish with pro logic ii? First of all thanks for answering my question about only 2 speakers functioning with the television. I now seem to have a similar problem again with the front speakers in that when I play music and movies that are not 5.1 my rear speakers dont work. I need to select pro logic ii on my dvd player for all 4 speakers to work but that causes my front speakers to go very low. Please help.
How do I write this in first order logic? I am trying to figure out how to represent the following in first order logic, but I just don't get it. 1) Every student is committed to academic honesty 2) Sheila is the only individual X such that X can get Sheila's car started. 3) Things that are near the earth fall to the ground unless something holds them up. 4) Dinner is available only if I booked in advance for at least two people. 5) Nothing exists except atoms and empty space; everything else is opinion. 6) No man helps another without helping himself.
Do you use logic in your thinking and reasoning, or go with your instinctive feelings? In simple terms, logic to a philosopher, is what's valid, and what's not valid... Sometimes instinct is very strong, however, people seem to fight their instincts. No it isn't, Iron oak, LOGIC, is what's valid, what's not valid what can be argued, proven. Working out how not to make the same silly mistakes over and over again. INSTINCT, is not use to describe an existing condition, or state of mind. It is more an instant gut feeling. Thank you so much for your answer... Cassandra
What is the logic behind the chickenhawk argument? I try to apply the same logic to anything else, and it seems to not work, why? first respondant, that didn't help at all. Doesn't it make more sense to support the war, whether just or not, in the basis of raising troop morale?
How do you translate Propositional Logic Into Term Logic? I have a class assignment do soon and I am trying to figure out how to Translate Propositional logic into term logic, For example. If it is a Mammal, Then it is an Animal If It is a Cat, Then it is a Mammal If it is a Cat, Then it is an Animal How would i change this to term logic?
Why do Christians and other religious folk view science and logic with such contempt and disregard? For example those who say that you cant use logic to figure out whether there is such a thing as this god they worship and those who reject evolution and want creation taught in schools. Do they realize that their beliefs are a disgrace to centuries of progress based on reason and logic because it was reason and logic that gave us technology, innovation, medical cures, made us understand our world better, NOT faith?
What do you understand to be common sense? How would you compare that to logic? Are there more than one kind of logic? I suppose so, if you consider Boolean logic. Or is that Boolean algebra? Would philosophers and anthropologists tend to have a different definition of "common sense?" What then is meant by "book sense" and "street smarts"? You who call yourself -.- You wrote in reply: "...ultimately it's just a conservative appeal to metaphysical standards that are being questioned by the real philosopher in the 1st place. Justification by common sense is so ridiculous. It's about as bad a fallacy as appealing to nature." What metaphysical standards would you recommend, if this matter were up to you? And if you decline to appeal to nature, then to what do you appeal? To reply to the other guy, what if you don't know what the feckless is a refrigerator? You might not know then to close it. There are people in the world, still, who do not know what freezers, refrigerators, escalators, and other products of modern technology are. So...... what then? About assuming, I mean?

How can i recover my memory? How can i use partioning logic? I recently removed a partition with 1.2 g of memory. I removed it thinking ill gain more memory but i didnt. I had 15g free space nd when i removed it i thought it'll go up to 16.2 but it didnt. Wat happend? Can i recover tht lost memory? I've heard about something called partition logic. Can i use it to remove partitions without losing any memory?
What if there really were other planets with intelligent life? What if they have a different logic? For example, they might have a way to create a wormhole by snapping their fingers. They might even be able to defy the laws of physics. What if their planet had no friction? Don't go all human logic on me, because I know that anything is possible. You never know because we haven't actually explored the entire universe. You know nothing! Just because WE have logic doesn't mean it is true! And at least I have an imagination! To the people who agree, thank you.
Is there a good website for logic practice? I love logic problems, both classic and contemporary. Syllogisms, "recognize the fallacy," and "which symbol comes next in the pattern?" questions are awesome, but I haven't had much luck finding a good website just by searching. Any ideas? Preferably sites in "quiz" form, where you can select answers on the web page, and then click "finish" or something and you see how many you got right and the answers. In any case, I prefer that they have the answers somehow on the site. Thanks!
How do we know that basic logic is real? For example, with the equation; 1+1=x. People claim that simple logic dictates the value of x, which they say is "2". How can we be sure that the logic cited is real and correct?
Is human logic the best way to go about things? I mean, human logic is wrong in some instances, especially in quantum mechanics and physics. There are so many counter-intuitive things in these two areas, that it is almost unbelievable, that human logic is so wrong. So since human logic is wrong in unlocking the mysteries on how everything works, is human logic the answer for everything else?
On the topic of Symbolic logic and the like. Where may I be able to discover good excersises for practice? Im looking for excersises to excel my practicalites in the area of symbolic logic and the like (Or anything that is similar that may help in writing aritcles of philosophy). Yes, I am a beginner in the subject so I would appreciate some assistance in discovering some websites that will increase my abilities to apply this subject--a website that may allow me to utilize this subject in a practical sense, not just reading the literal sense. I have to learn by doing, not just reading. I have some introductory material on the subject with some excersises in the books, but for some odd reason I still feel Im not getting the needed substance to press forward. Any additional information will help, and any suggestions would be accepted!! Perhaps even an example from someone, or pointers as well. Thanks so much. Blessings.
When we sleep does the LOGIC and MEMORY centers of the brain deactivate? Though there is no definitive proof either way, I believe the memory and logic centers of the brain shut off when we dream. Otherwise there is no possible way things such as being able to fly; monsters; thoughts of dead people interreacting with us; etc could occur. I've had dreams of being back in the 8th grade without realizing I am 25 years old and in Grad School. I've had dreams of being able to fly without knowledge of how I attained the power or a realization that gravity doesn't allow for it. I've woken in the morning without being able to remember who I am, where I am, etc. In my dreams I've done extremely illogical things: killing without hesitation, incest, and worst of all, running in fear only to somehow run slower and slower with each step. I feel the brain's memory and logic centers shut down during sleep. Is there evidence otherwise?
