How many people--statistically speaking--never get married, nor ever get into a serious relationship?

I am insatiably curious as of late as to how many people, statistically speaking, never get married, never have kids, nor ever get in a steady relationship for the entirety of their lives. In other words, I wonder what the numbers are of people in the world (or just the United States) whom spend their entire lives 'alone', in the significant other sense of the word. Does anyone know of any statistics as far as this goes? Or any useful tidbits about it? It is something I'd like to research. Anyone?

1. Nope, I have no information about any kind of statistics. I have heard of people who have lived their entire lives alone though, so its something that does happen just not often.
